Amber Heard’s mother likes to say that ever since Amber was a little girl, she’s been trying to see how far she can get, how fast. “A horse became a bike, a bike became a car, a car became a plane,” Heard explains. Marie Claire Amber HeardAnd now, when I ask her if she likes flying, she looks puzzled. “It’s like walking, I guess,” she says. “It’s just how I get around.”

She’s certainly picked up speed since she left Texas for Hollywood 13 years ago, landing, among other things, the perfectly descriptive title role in All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006), a part as Demi Moore’s daughter in The Joneses (2009), and a life-altering costar in Johnny Depp, with whom she lit up The Rum Diary (2011). Much was made of this union in the tabloids, as they remarked on the age gap (Depp is 52; Heard is 29) and the timing (the end of Depp’s 14-year relationship with the French singer and actress Vanessa Paradis was announced in June 2012).

Marie Claire Amber HeardHeard and Depp were married last February, sparking more or less instant rumors of divorce. When, in September, they engaged in ostentatious public displays of affection on a series of red carpets during a film festival tour, that was deemed suspect, too. In other words, Heard has been thrust early into what her friend Olivia Wilde describes as “someone else’s spotlight.” But as soon as you meet her, you think it’s only a matter of time before the spotlight becomes her own.

AMBER HEARD’S whirlwind journey from TEXAS to TINSELTOWN reads like a riveting Hollywood fairy tale —don’t forget the part where she marries Johnny Depp. Here, the 29-year-old BOMBSHELL reveals the confident and PENSIVE woman behind those COME-HITHER eyes.

If there’s one thing you should know about the actress Amber Heard —and maybe you do already— it’s that she drives a 1968 Mustang. Well, she doesn’t drive it that often, because she’s regularly on set somewhere far-flung (recently, London for work, though she prefers to sleep in her own bed at home in L.A.) and sometimes it’s in the shop (as it was at the time of our interview). And from time to time she takes out a rental car so she’s not such an obvious paparazzi target, which is something that’s only magnified since she married Johnny Depp earlier this year.

But Heard, 29, is partial to the Mustang, which she had restored, probably in part because it reminds her of growing up in Austin. “Classic cars are for me the most interesting things in life,” she explains. “They’re difficult but they’re full of character. They have their own quirks and problems. You have to have enough guts to wing it. But in order to adequately love and respect them, you have to fight them.

How much do you really know about Amber Heard, actress and Johnny Depp slayer ? For this month’s cover story, ELLE sat down with Heard in advance of the July 1 release of Magic Mike XXL, and discovered she’s far more complicated—and even more fun—than the tabloids let on. Here’s just a sneak peek at what Heard had to say. For the full story, pick up the July issue—available digitally and in select cities on June 16, and on newsstands nationwide June 23.

On the dearth of layered female roles in Hollywood:
“I get a stack of scripts, like, once a month, and most of the time, you find these placeholder girls that are there to provide a bounce for the male character. So we know he’s funny because she’s serious and she’s mad at him. We know he’s strong because she needs saving. So really her job is to validate this personality trait of our hero or male. I mean we’re trying to imitate life, and it seems to me a deeply saddening injustice that we are so uncreative and uninterested in developing representations of female life.”

On tiring of being put in “a Barbie box”:
“I feel like I’m constantly fighting against my exterior, or this exterior presentation of myself because of how I look or perhaps because of who I’m with.”

On life since marrying her husband, Johnny Depp:
“Nothing is a dramatic change. We’ve been together for a long time now, so it’s been a fairly organic process. I have a fiercely independent spirit.”

On the fear of losing her freedom to fame:
“The thing that really scares me is the potential of losing my freedom. I never want for my life to lose the ability to transverse the world, with freedom and ease. The freedom and ease I have worked so hard to acquire for myself.”
